The American Psychological poll done in 2008 reported the following stress statistics:
- The decline in the economy and its impact on the health conditions of American families is reported by 87% of women to cause them additional concerns and anxieties.
- Over 80% of the population stated that the uncertainty of the economy was causing them to be stressed
- 78% of men polled said they were concerned about money and financial matters
- 83% of women polled were concerned about money and financial matters
- More than half of the people polled said they were concerned about their ability to provide financially for their families
The following stress statistics all have to do with the stresses people have in the work place:
- More than half of all of the people polled reported that their jobs played a significant role in the amount of stress they had
- More than half of those polled said that they were stressed more by situations and problems at work than they were with home situations
- Over 60% of the people that answered said their work related stresses were due to the heavy workloads they had
- More than half of the individuals said that they were very concerned that they might develop health related issues due to the amount of work related stress they suffer
- Job insecurity affects over 45% of people
- One out of every four workers has at some time taken a mental health day off from work
- People who are self-employed report the least amount of work related stress
- Leaders in industry such as the executives and the people working as management have the highest levels of stress related to their jobs
- 73% of the people stated that money is one of the key factors in their levels of stress
Stress statistics can show us how other people are affected by the different things that are happening in the country and the world around us. We would be remiss to write down stress statistics and not include some of the statistics on the increase of depression. Depression can be brought on because the person feels inadequate or stressed over their situation.
- In 2007 fifty percent of the people polled stated they had feelings of irritability and anger on a regular basis
- In 2008 sixty percent of the people polled reported they suffered from feelings of anger and irritability on a regular basis
- In 2007 50 out of 100 people stated they felt fatigued most of the time
- In 2008 53 out of 100 individuals reported feelings of fatigued
- More than 16% of the individuals reported that they smoked cigarettes to help manage their levels of stress
- One out of every five people stated that they drank alcohol in order to manage their stress related problems
- More than 121 million are currently being treated for depression in the world
- 19 million American adults are suspected of suffering from stress related depression
